Conference on "The New Middle East:" Social and Political Change in the Twenty-First CenturyEvent DetailsDate(s) & Time(s):: October 18, 2012 at 7:00 PM Location: Levis Faculty Center, 3rd Floor, 919 W. Illinois St., Urbana, IL Phone: 217-244-7331 Email: csames@illinois.edu Link: http://newmiddleeast.csames.illinois.edu Event Description
The Arab spring took the world by surprise: in a region long ruled by strongmen, a series of popular revolts toppled the rulers of Tunisia, Egypt and Libya, and continue a sometimes bloody confrontation with the regimes in Yemen, Syria, and 'yet again' Egypt. Iran's 'Green Movement' expressed analogous yearnings for freedom and democracy. The conference will explore not only these movements but the entire context of the new Middle East, bringing together leading scholars in Middle Eastern studies to explore a broad range of topics, from religion, politics and social movements to popular culture.
