Autism is a disorder of neural development characterized by impaired social interaction and communication, and by restricted and repetitive behavior. The diagnostic criteria require that symptoms become apparent before a child is three years old. Autism affects information processing in the brain by altering how nerve cells and their synapses connect and organize; how this occurs is not well understood. Experts estimate that 1 out of 88 children age 8 will have an Autism Spectrum Disorder (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, March 30, 2012). Males are four times more likely to have an ASD than females.
Registration forms are available by calling 217-629-8030. Together we can raise funds to support the Autism Program at the Hope Institute and “Together we can solve the puzzle.”
