Music by Parkland Guitar Ensemble Additional artist lecture: October 11 at 1:15pm, Parkland Art Gallery This exhibition of paintings by Philadelphia artist Morgan Craig explores how the abandoned architectural edifices from a post-industrial era affect and influence a society. Large in scale, Morgan’s paintings depict the stark interiors of forgotten and ruinous factories, prisons, or urban structures. Morgan states, “They not only convey knowledge about the past, but also serve an ideological function in the present. These three-dimensional structures play pivotal roles in shaping both societal and cultural understandings of history while simultaneously aiding in an ongoing process of present-day identity construction.” Morgan Craig has exhibited throughout the U.S.A. Canada, Europe, and Australia, including OK Harris in New York City, SPACES in Cleveland, the Delaware Center for Contemporary Arts, and the Australian National University. Craig has received numerous awards including a Pollock Krasner Foundation Grant, Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grants (2007, 2011), and Pennsylvania Council on the Arts Individual Artist Fellowships in 2006 and 2008. He has also been invited to several residencies including Atelje Stundars in Finland, the Macdowell Colony, and Bemis Center for the Contemporary Arts. Selections from his work will be featured in several upcoming exhibitions, including the Delaware Museum of Art, Edinboro University in Edinboro, Pennsylvania, and the Pennsylvania College of Technology-Penn State in Williamsport. He was also granted a fellowship at the Cite Internationale des Arts in Paris for summer 2012. In 2013, he will return to Australia for a two-person exhibition on Cockatoo Island in Sydney Harbor. |
