The 4th Annual Women’s Power Lunch Against Cancer, benefiting Simmons Cancer Institute at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, will feature internationally-celebrated mystery writer Sara Paretsky.
The event is scheduled Friday, April 12 at the President Abraham Lincoln Hotel, 701 E. Adams St., Springfield. Proceeds from the event benefit all cancer research at Simmons Cancer Institute at Southern Illinois University. Tickets are $50 each or $500 for a table of 10 tickets and are available by calling 217-545-2955 or registering online at www.siumed.edu/cancer.
Registration and networking will begin at 11 a.m. Lunch will be served at noon, followed by a book signing at 1 p.m. The Women’s Power Lunch Against Cancer celebrates and encourages mutual support among women as primary health caregivers in our communities.
According to her biography, Paretsky revolutionized the mystery world with her main character V.I. Warshawski in 1982 by “creating a believable investigator with the grit and the smarts to tackle problems on the mean streets.” With this creation, Paretsky “challenged a genre in which women typically were either vamps or victims.”
Paretsky’s writing has earned her many awards. Among her achievements are the Cartier Diamond Dagger for lifetime achievement from the British Crime Writers. The group also awarded her the Gold Dagger for Blacklist, the best novel of 2004. Paretsky has received the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters from several different universities.
She has also received recognition for assisting other women in breaking gender barriers. Paretsky created “Sisters in Crime” in 1986, a worldwide organization to support women crime writers. It earned her Ms. Magazine’s Woman of the Year award in 1987.
The mission of Simmons Cancer Institute at SIU is to serve the people of central and southern Illinois by addressing their present and future cancer needs through education, research, patient care and community service. Its website is www.siumed.edu/cancer.
