Logan County Cancer Screening Program Ending

Updated:
The Logan County Board of
Health is ending its participation in the Illinois Breast and Cervical
Cancer Program next month. It's a program that offers screening for
those cancers as well as diagnostics and follow-ups at no cost to
hundreds of uninsured women.

County officials say the program is
dependent on grants from the state, and they were unsure they would get
enough money to keep it running.

David Hepler, who's a member of the Logan County Board of Health, says those who use the program won't be left unserved.

"I
believe that part of the reduction in state funding is due to a
combination of increased Medicaid signups, as well as the introduction
of Affordable Care Act plans, so there will be more private/public
options," Hepler said.

Hepler was the only one on the Board of
Health who voted against ending Logan County's involvement with the
cancer program. He wanted to wait to see if state funding would come in
last-minute.

Logan County's last day with the program is June 30. Logan County Cancer Screening Program Ending
