Lung Donor Lists

Updated:

A little girl's fight for a lung donation that saved her life permanently changes the way children qualify for transplants.

Monday, a donor board voted to make the temporary "under 12"  donor lung allocation policy permanent.

The vote was set in motion after ten-year-old Sarah Murnaghan's parents fought for her to get on an adult organ donor waiting list in June of 2013 even though she was under twelve, part of the original guidelines.

Sarah had been fighting for her life last spring as she battled cystic fibrosis.

She had to undergo two double lung transplants.

A federal judge granted a temporary order that allowed her to join that adult list and she was able to get adult lungs.

Now the Murnaghan's say they are thrilled that other children will be able to enjoy life like sarah has been able to do so far this summer.

The policy will still only be on a case-by-case basis depending on the severity of the patient's condition.
