More HIV Cases in Southern Illinois

Updated:

Illinois public health officials say HIV cases in southern Illinois are on the rise.

The Jackson County Health Department tracks the data in 19 counties. The region average 14 to 15 new HIV cases a year. But that number jumped to 21 in 2012, and 23 last year.

The Jackson County Health Department says more than half of the cases involve people who are 24 years old or younger.

Southern Illinois doctors suspect many young people do not know about the sexually transmitted disease.
