SIU Cancer Trial Brings New Hope to Head and Neck Cancer Patients

Updated:
Local brain and neck
cancer patients may have new hope. A new clinical trial at SIU
Healthcare in Springfield is intended to help doctors learn how to
better treat head and neck cancer.

Patients will be given a
unique cancer drug, called Multikine. Doctors say the treatment has the
potential to work with the body's natural immune system to fight against
tumors and save the lives of more patients.

"We can cure cancer
but now 20 or 30 years later after all the treatment is done, begin to
realize there are all these long-term side effects. So what we're trying
to do is to deliver smart therapy. The least amount of therapy required
to treat and cure the disease while at the same time maintaining a very
high quality of life," said Dr. Krishna Rao, Professor at SIU School of
Medicine.
