Video of Cracking at Chicago Willis Tower's "The Ledge"

(Video via NBC 5 Chicago)

While visiting Chicago's attractions, including the 103rd floor of the Willis Tower, a family from California experienced the stuff of nightmares.

As tourists do, seeing the sights and snapping the pictures from one of the four glass decks, altogether known as The Ledge, cracks appeared.

Back in 2009, when the "tourist experience" opened, engineers explained that the encased decks are comprised of 3 layers of glass. Each individual layer is a thickness of about 1/2 inch. Capacity: 5 tons.

Building spokesman Bill Utter told the Chicago Sun Times that the cracked portion was merely a protective, scratch-resistant coating behaving as it was designed. It's happened before and does not affect the box's structural integrity.

It's happened before.
