AGOURA HILLS, Calif. (AP) -- It might have seemed like a good idea at the time. Two college students have been busted while making a film. Authorities say the students were standing above a freeway wearing military fatigues, had a gas mask and were carrying real-looking assault rifles. People panicked and called 911. The California Highway Patrol shut down the freeway yesterday for at least 10 minutes while deputies from a helicopter ordered the young men to surrender. Los Angeles County Sheriff's investigators say the students complied. The students were arrested on suspicion of causing a false emergency.
GIFT WRAPPED MARIJUANA
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) -- These gifts didn't come from Santa's workshop. Authorities in Nebraska report finding 11 pounds of gift-wrapped pot in the trunk of a car. The Lincoln Journal Star reports Lancaster County sheriff's deputies had gotten a tip during another traffic stop a few minutes earlier. Deputies say they tore open two gift-wrapped boxes and found 34 heat-sealed packages of marijuana. Garrett Scott Brasel of Cambria, Ill., was jailed on suspicion of possessing marijuana with intent to deliver and possession of a controlled substance.
WASHINGTON (AP) -- The ZooLights are shining in the nation's capital. The National Zoo in Washington has switched on its holiday light display. The zoo says more than a-half million environmentally-friendly LED lights will be twinkling through Jan. 2. Admission is free. The only days ZooLights will not be on display are Dec. 24, 25 and 31. And there's something for the grown-ups. A ticketed event called BrewLights on Dec. 3 will have microbrew and craft beers for adults to sample.
TREES FOR TROOPS
BALLSTON SPA, N.Y. (AP) -- Santa is getting some helpers -- in uniform. Soldiers and airmen from the New York National Guard are joining the effort to send Christmas trees to military bases around the country and overseas. This morning the troops will be at the Ellms Tree Farm in Ballston Spa, New York. They'll load about 125 donated Christmas trees. The Trees for Troops program was launched in 2005. For the past several years the effort has helped to deliver about 17,000 real Christmas trees each year to bases throughout the U.S. and overseas.
