Updated: Tuesday, September 24 2013, 05:59 PM CDT

State Rep. Jim Durkin is taking over the reins as the new House Republican leader.

Tom Cross, who has served in the position for 10 years, has stepped aside for another opportunity.

Durkin served in the Illinois House of Representatives from 1995 to 2002, until he became the Republican nominee for the United States Senate.

Durkin returned to the general assembly in 2006, when he was elected to represent the 82nd District.
