Service Above Self: Flags Line Vermilion Street

Updated: Wednesday, May 28 2014, 12:55 PM CDT
VERMILION COUNTY -- In honor of Memorial Day, volunteers are displaying two thousand American flags along North Vermilion Street in Danville.

For the 14th straight year the Danville Rotary Club is planting American flags along the busiest road in the city in remembrance of service men and women.

Individuals and area businesses were able to purchase a flag for five dollars and tag it with the name of someone they want to honor.

Most of the proceeds go to the war museum and a new scholarship fund for veterans.

Service Above Self is the rotary slogan and volunteers say this was the perfect opportunity to put the phrase in to action.

For the first time, Junior ROTC members from Danville High School were present.

Volunteers say it's the least they can do to show service men and women their appreciation.

Volunteers will collect the flags after the holiday. Service Above Self: Flags Line Vermilion Street
