8-Year-Old Brings Loaded Gun Clip To School

Updated: Tuesday, May 6 2014, 05:17 PM CDT

CHAMPAIGN -- Police in Champaign say an 8-year-old male student brought a loaded magazine to school this past Friday.

According to a police report, the incident happened around 11:45am Friday at Booker T. Washington Elementary School, in the 600 block of East Grove Street.

Police say school staff informed them of a 9mm magazine that fell from the child's coat pocket during recess. Detectives later searched the child's home and located ammunition and drug paraphernalia.

Parents of children at the school believe although the incident appears isolated, it reminds them to stay on task.

"It just reinforces my habits where I always ask..you know any parents that my son's gonna go.. you know to their house...that's one of the questions I ask is if they have any sort of guns on the property," says Leah Taylor, a parent at the school.

Police say no other children came into contact with the magazine. Also, the child possibly didn't even know what he was carrying. Police are still investigating.
