Accusations Flying in GOP Governor's Race

Updated: Monday, February 3 2014, 05:27 PM CST
Accusations are flying on the gubernatorial campaign trail today. State
treasurer Dan Rutherford announced at a press conference that he is
launching an independent investigation into allegations made against him
by an employee of the treasurer's office.

But Rutherford says
the claims are false. He claims the employee's lawyer has connections to
another candidate for governor--Bruce Rauner.

Rutherford said the lawyer tried to extort $300,000 from him to keep quiet.

"Bruce
Rauner has been reported as saying he has book on all his opponents,
and that he intends to destroy every one of those," Rutherford said. "No
one, no one, including Bruce Rauner, is going to destroy me."

Rutherford declined to say what the allegations against him are, saying it's a personnel matter.

We
received a response from Rauner's campaign. They said his campaign
hired the attorney Rutherford refers to to review an office space lease
last year. That's because their regular lawyer had a conflict of
interest with the landlord. Rauner's campaign said he never discussed
anything with her related to the treasurer. Accusations Flying in GOP Governor's Race
