CHAMPAIGN -- A central Illinois woman will be spending time behind bars after pleading guilty to killing her cousin in an ATV accident while drinking and driving.

24-year-old Katheryn Daly was sentenced to 3.5 years in prison for reckless homicide.

Daly was drinking at a party last October when she got behind the wheel of an ATV and crashed.

She pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing, but a Champaign County judge rejected her family's request for leniency.

Friday at the sentencing hearing, her family spoke out saying putting her in jail would not be justice.

"So if there were community service or public service, sharing her story with other young people that might prevent them from drinking and driving."

Other witnesses testified for her good behavior and said that putting Daly in prison would be a disservice to the community and would further hurt her family.

The judge stated that this was no accident and that the circumstances were not unique. Adding, that if someone decides to get behind the wheel of a vehicle after drinking, and they kill someone, justice must be served.
