Bel-Aire Court Hearing

Updated: Friday, August 22 2014, 09:37 AM CDT

Springfield city lawyers are laying out their case against the owner of the Bel-Aire motel. Before an administrative hearing officer today, city attorneys gave a summary of the alleged violations.

City inspectors have found at the troubled property. One city attorney tells FOX Illinois the property owner has racked up $114,000 in code violation fines that's on appeal.

So the city started a new round of inspections and at the hearing, city officials stated there are currently more than 1,000 violations pending for the 74-room transient motel. The owner tells us he's close to a resolution.

"But I'm trying to sell it and there's two good buyers and we will deal with approaching the city and if the city would accept the proposal, I think we could resolve this yesterday. some people want  to make a really 4-star hotel, 5-star hotel.  So I think it would be really nice for the city to get it settled." said Gopan Motwani Bel-Aire owner.

When Newschannel at Nine contacted the city attorney heading up the case, Steve Rahn, he told us he was unaware of any such plan. Rahn reminded us that any new buyer of the property  would incur responsiblity for bringing the motel up to city code, and may also be held liable for the outstanding fines owed the city.
