Bel-Aire Motel Violates More Building Codes

Updated: Thursday, May 8 2014, 03:31 PM CDT

A place that several people still call home is slapped with hundreds of new building code violations.

Staffers are working to repair the Bel-Aire Motel, a building that many call an eye-sore.

Newschannel at Nine's Christina Mueller shows us what's being done to improve the property and why a Springfield alderman says it should be leveled.

"Let's be realistic, the property needs to be leveled."

Rusted stairs, damaged ceilings, and mold are just a few of the hundreds of violations inspectors cited at this dated Springfield property.

The Bel-Aire falls in Alderman Cory Jobe's ward and he tells us the blighted motel went from more than 350 violations to 700.

"We're bringing in crews to get one after another and we'll knock them out one by one."

Ralph Hammers says he's been working non-stop to fix some of the many maintainance issues at the Bel-Aire, but he says the problem is the tenants the owners take in.

He showed us his room on the second floor. He admits rooms on the bottom floor aren't maintained like his.

"Part of it, a lot of it, well, actually most of it is the residents themselves that don't keep update on their rooms, of which we fall out and get the slack for it."

We talked to some Bel-Aire tenants. They agreed, some of the problems come from bad tenants.

The motel rents on a weekly or monthly basis, with no deposit. So oftentimes, vacated rooms are in pretty bad shape. But this bottom floor renter says some problems aren't their fault.

"Day one, we walked in and there was a disgusting smell. I mean, there were things they could have fixed that they don't. They're kind of cheap here."

Jobe says he wants the city t do more, and battling it out with out-of-state owners isn't getting anything done quick enough.

"This owner has no interest in bringing it up to code. He lives in Florida. He takes the money from individuals who live there, and he takes it back to Florida."
