Champaign Crime Slightly Down

Updated: Friday, July 18 2014, 04:44 PM CDT

CHAMPAIGN - Many can't forget the very violent summer Champaign area residents witnessed last year, but new data Thursday suggests violent crime is slightly down in Champaign.

According to Champaign police, 9 people were murdered by this same time last year, whereas only 2 murders have taken place so far in 2014.

In 2013, there were 220 aggravated assaults....ten less this year, all together nearly 20 less violent crimes have occurred.

Authorities says it's partly attributed to organizations like Crime Stoppers where residents have a safe place to share what they've witnessed, thus deterring criminals from more activity.

"We've become a wonderful conduit for individuals conveying information to the appropriate law enforcement agencies for whatever reason they may not have come forward---either not wanting there name to be in the media, not wanting to have to testify, the fear of retaliation or whatever the case may be," says John Hecker.

Hecker also says they never want to deter people from contacting police and their agency is just another vehicle if people become scared to speak out.

Also, authorities are always looking for leads on all types of incidents. People should never assume that a crime is too small to comment on.

Hecker also told me Crime Stoppers' efforts have led to arrests in many major cases. They continually receive tips from the community every day that assist in getting criminals off the street.
