Champaign Park District Offers Spalding Park For Central H.S. Relocation

Updated: Tuesday, April 29 2014, 02:00 PM CDT
CHAMPAIGN -- Take a look at the proposed new home for Central High School, eighty acres of land with an estimated eighty million dollar price tag to build. Just last week another option, Spalding Park came from the Park District.

Joe Deluce, Executive Director of the Champaign Park District said
"a lot of the facility's are close to people's homes. It's not out in the middle of no where. It's a really local infield site that could really benefit a lot of people. A lot of kids could actually walk to High School".

Transportation and convenience are among the biggest complaints if the school moves to Interstate drive and Neil street. So the idea of building at Spalding Park, which is less than a mile away appears more attractive for some.

Cyndy Lammert has four sons that graduated from Central High School...she said, "if we can have all that we need at the location on Spalding, Judah, you know that location, that would be my first choice".

The school board is looking to build a facility to accommodate approximately 1700 students. There's also talk of building an on-site athletic facility and band area.

Judy Wiegand, Supt. of Champaign Unit 4 schools says
"I think we need to start taking a look at what the most important piece is and that would be the academic programming. So lets take a look at what that could look like and then start adding in those other pieces regarding athletic fields and so forth".

The land proposed at Spaulding Park is under 37 acres, which may not accommodate the schools plans. Parents believe extra curricular activities must be considered.

"Academics is primary yes, but sometimes for many kids..being involved in those other activities is what keeps them there. It keeps them involved", Lammert says.Champaign Park District Offers Spalding Park For Central H.S. Relocation
