Champaign Vigil for Ferguson

Updated: Monday, August 18 2014, 11:34 AM CDT

THERE IN FERGUSON AND ACROSS THE COUNTRY VIGILS WERE HELD TODAY FOR MICHAEL BROWN.

NEWSCHANNEL AT NINE'S KIM SHINE REPORTS FROM CHAMPAIGN WHERE A LOCAL GROUP SAYS SOMETHING SIMILAR HAPPENED JUST A FEW YEARS AGO.

"Hands up, don't shoot! Hands up, dont shoot!"

DOZENS OF PEOPLE IN CHAMPAIGN, YOUNG AND OLD,  WITH A MESSAGE OF CHANGE.
REMEMBERING THE LIVES OF YOUNG, AFRICAN AMERICAN MEN LIKE 18-YEAR-OLD MICHAEL BROWN.

ON AUGUST 9TH, THE MISSOURI TEENAGER WAS SHOT AND KILLED BY A FERGUSON POLICE OFFICER.

"Their lives mean something. They are loved by their family, they are loved by their neighbors, they are loved by their friends and then their lives are taken away from them in such a horrific way."

AND JUST AS IMPORTANT AS THEIR MESSAGE WAS THE LOCATION OF SATURDAY'S VIGIL.
THE CORNER OF PROSPECT AND VINE IS STEPS AWAY FROM WHERE A CHAMPAIGN POLICE OFFICER FATALLY SHOT 15-YEAR-OLD KIWANE CARRINGTON IN 2009.

ON SUNDAY, NAACP PRESIDENT PATRICIA AVERY AND A GROUP OF OTHERS FROM THE VIGIL ARE TRAVELLING TO FERGUSON FOR ANOTHER RALLY IN THE ST. LOUIS AREA.

"Until we come together and stand together it's gonna happen. Kiwane's not the first, Mike Brown won't be the last."

CARRINGTON'S AUNT -- RHONDA WILLIAMS -- SAYS THE VIGIL IS BITTERSWEET.

"The sad moment is, it just seems like everybody's going around shooting at the drop of a hat. They see black on black and they just get afraid of black people."

DRIVERS PASSING BY HONKED THEIR HORNS IN SUPPORT
AS PEOPLE RAISED THEIR SIGNS AND THEIR VOICES TO END THE VIOLENCE AND HOLD BOTH LAW ENFORCEMENT AND THEIR NEIGHBORS MORE ACCOUNTABLE.

"If you follow the lead of what's going on in Ferguson, look at what those young people are doing. Look at the level of, they're going up against armored vehicles, the militarization of police."

"I'm hurting. I've been hurting for the last five years since I lost Kiwane Carrington. So, for everybody to say they're hurting they should be out here trying to make a difference."
