District 186 Administrators and Staff Kick-off New School Year

Updated: Friday, August 15 2014, 04:32 PM CDT

DISTRICT 186 -- Summer is winding down and the start of school in Springfield is just days away. That has District 186 administrators and staff rallying to start the school year off on the right foot.

"People get a chance to get reconnected, kind of get rejuvenated," District 186 School Board President Mike Zimmers.

School administrators, teachers, and parents ready to face challenges head on with a new leader at the helm.

"We have some great things happening with some of our professional development with teachers that I hope we see in the classrooms across the district. We're going to be continually talking about what's the environment for learning, how do we engage students in learning and how do we create that culture of excellence each and every day," said Superintendent Jennifer Gill.

"I think we need to communicate what we're doing better with the community so they have a better understanding of our mission and what we're trying to do in our schools," Zimmers said.

It also means fresh facility upgrades air conditioning is currently being installed at Iles school.

"We're really looking forward to that school being done and ready to go on monday morning. Fairview is already up and going and they have their boxes unpacked. We still have some roof upgrades and some things that have been set back by our heavy rains lately but we're going to be ready to go to start school," said Gill.

Students will be ready, too, after a new program was put into place to make sure all kids receive the necessary immunizations they need to attend public school.

"Immunizations and physicals are key to the health and well-being of everyone. I applaud the board for really taking a strong stand on the importance of it," said Mary Loken, consultant for the Regional Office of Education.

Administrators say the theme for this school year is culture for learning and they say it's going to take everyone coming together to create the most successful school year possible.

"All of the staff, all of the parents, all of the students and all of the teachers come together, we're going to live strong, we're going to grow, we're going to be successful in everything that we do," Gill said.

The first day of school for District 186 students is Monday.

The board wants to increase community involvement.

President Mike Zimmers says he's talked with principals and invites not only parents, but all community members to visit any of the school buildings throughout the year.
