District 186 Prepares for $13.9M of Work This Summer

Updated: Tuesday, April 22 2014, 10:58 AM CDT
Summer vacation, and that means construction time for District 186 schools.

The Springfield public school district is preparing for about $13.9 million worth of work this summer, including replacing roofs, putting in new HVAC systems, and repaving school parking lots. These big projects have to wait until the schools are empty.

Because of the winter weather's effects on the school calendar, construction is starting later than officials would like.

"Summer is really our only chance to do these big projects, and unfortunately that is increasingly getting shorter every year," said Director of Operations Darrell Schaver. "The earlier we start and the later we have to go, that makes it a challenge for the district."

The money for the repairs comes from a $90 million bond the district took out for health, life and safety projects. That fund is coming to an end. Schaver said he believes only $17 million is left, and most of that will be used this summer.District 186 Prepares for $13.9M of Work This Summer
