Enos Park Home Has New Owner

Updated: Monday, May 19 2014, 12:31 PM CDT

The Enos Park Neighborhood is ready to hand over keys to a newly renovated home to a Springfield Police Officer.

North 8th Street is known to be a rundown area with a high amount of crime, but the Neighborhood Association is offering the house, rent-free, to an officer willing to take on the challenge.

Newschannel at Nine's Lindsey Hess has the story.

The walls are painted. The siding is on. And a Springfield Police Officer will soon call this house in the Enos Park neighborhood home.

"We had some violence and some issues in the neighborhood."

So the Enos Park Neighborhood Improvement Association purchased the house.

"It was a very rundown, problematice rental property at the time that we bought it."

And for nearly a year, participants in some urban league programs rehabbed the house. Now it's available to a police officier rent-free.

"It's going to take a special person to want to live here. Obviously, you know, when you're off as an officer, you're never really off. But when you're living in the area that you're working in, you're really never off."

But when that officer takes on the challenge residents say, they'll feel safer living in the neighborhood.

"Because the different things that have been going on around the town, we do feel unsafe. But with someone who is definitely going to be watching, living in the neighborhood, I think that's going to be a real big asset."

Jodi Andrews has lived in the Enos Park Neighborhood for nearly 24 years, and helped renovate this home.

"I've went through the good and the bad and I'm so glad this is improvement."

And it's another step in making Enos Park a neighborhood where people want to live.

"He will be able to walk up and down the streets. It will be his neighborhood. When you live in a neighborhood, you usually know the people in the neighborhood and I think it will improve the neighborhood tremendously."

Added security to help turn a distressed neighborhood around.

"We're on our way. We're on our way out north."
