Farmers Advised to Be Cautious Of Metal Thefts

Updated: Monday, May 5 2014, 02:33 PM CDT

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY -- Over the last few weeks the Champaign County Sheriff's office has received a number of reports of farm equipment that's been stolen in order to scrap.

Someone stole a 100lb front tractor weight and brackets worth $1800.  Just last week, a 1200lb tractor wheel weight worth $1200 was also stolen.

The Sheriff's Office says it's a huge problem and continually rising throughout the county. Officials want to advise farmers to  monitor their  sheds closely and mark all equipment so it's easily identifiable if stolen.

A lieutenant also said you usually  know who lives in your area, so if you see someone out of place or you notice suspicious vehicles passing through, don't be afraid to call the Sheriff's Office.
