Franklin Middle School Hosts 5k Run for Fellow Teacher

Updated: Tuesday, June 3 2014, 04:36 PM CDT
SPRINGFIELD -- The day was just right for Franklin Middle School to come together in celebration of a teacher's life.

Those close to the school joined together to participate in a 5K in Washington Park.

It was a time of remembrance and an effort to raise money to preserve the legacy of an educator who touched the lives of many.

It
was a momentous reunion for Franklin Middle School as past and current
students, faculty, friends, and family gathered for the school's
inaugural 5K race.

The
Scott Flohr 5K fun run is an effort initiated by the local school to
pay tribute to their fellow faculty member Scott Flohr, who passed away
last fall after battling cancer.

The event will help raise money for a new 8 mile track for the school…  a landmark that will be dedicated to Flohr…  keeping his memory alive.

“When he passed it kind of took our whole Franklin community as a shock,” said Karen Stroemer, Assistant Principal.  “So we wanted to come up with something…  people were giving us memorials so we wanted to do something with it for the school that would last."

More
than 300 walkers and runners attended the race to honor an educator
that impacted their lives, including first place winner Tyler Pence who
had Flohr as a track and field coach.

“He just showed me hard work, I probably would have never started track or keep doing track if it weren't for him,” said Pence.  “So now I'm still running track in college.  So clearly he started it for me."

Even
those that could not attend made sure to contribute to the donation
pile and wrote to the school about the incredible teacher that was
Franklin Middle School's number one fan.

"I think it's wonderful and he would be so proud and I know he's up there watching,” said Emma Flohr, Scott’s mother.

The goal is to raise 30-thousand dollars, which will cover the cost of building the track.  As for a Flohr 5k run next year…  The school says that they are definitely considering making it an annual event.

Those
who knew Flohr say that he coached almost every sport at Franklin,
bought any shirt that a student sold, and would have been the first in
line to participate in the 5-k if he was here today.
