Get a Free Bike, Urbana

Updated: Friday, May 9 2014, 12:01 PM CDT

URBANA -- Get ready to see more bikes on the road. As a report says, the numbers of people biking to work has increased about 60% over the last decade. That increase has Springfield and other cities across the nation investing in bike lanes and bike share programs to make commuting more bike-friendly.

Residents in Urbana wanting to hit the bike trails got a helping hand Thursday as hundreds lined up for a chance to take home a free bike.

But not everyone got to walk away with a free new ride.

The giveaway is an event that the Urbana Police Department hosts about twice a year, handing out bikes that they find just sitting around the city with no one to ride them.

After they make sure they're not stolen, they are then able to hand them out to whoever in the community wants of needs one.

"Yeah, I've been here since 7:00am...been camping out, some sleeping bags and stuff. IT's been a pretty fun day."

"It means a lot to the person, something that they can have, call their own. Something they can use to get around, something that they can use to visit friends, do things with."

The police has 100 bikes to give out Thursday, so not everyone waiting in line is going to get one. But officers say it won't be long until they can try again.
