Governor Announces Funding for Danville's Palmer Arena Renovation

Updated: Saturday, August 9 2014, 07:35 PM CDT
DANVILLE-- Donna Lackey says, "If that building was to go away, I think
that would just be another dagger to Danville saying that's a dying
town, there's no reason to go there." Illinois Governor Pat Quinn says,
"We understand how important this building is, the civic center is, to
the people of Danville and Vermilion County."

A sizable check and
a huge vote of confidence. Governor Quinn delivered both in Danville
Thursday, announcing funds to help renovate the David S. Palmer Arena.
"We're investing $850,000 to help the civic center do things for the
21st century."

The center was built 30 years ago, and now needs
roof and air conditioning repairs, expanded banquet halls, and
technological upgrades. Lackey says, "The inside I'm sure does need
renovations to make it more modern and more competitive with other
venues like in Indiannapolis or Champaign." Donna says Danville needs to
try to keep up, pointing to the size of arenas in Indianapolis or the
renovations currently underway at the State Farm Center in Champaign.

Mayor
Scott Eisenhauer says the investment money is similar to what Quinn has
pledged to the area in the past. "The Governor has been extremely good
to Danville in his 5 years in office. He's provided economic development
dollars for infrastructure improvements."

But for Donna, it's
not just about the building, it's what the building will attract. "It's
really important to hang onto jobs because we have lost so many
industries over the last 15-20 years." Quinn says it needs to be ready
for trade shows, conferences, and concerts. "We have to invest here. You
don't grow unless you invest." And that's music to Donna's ears. "The
perception of Danville being a growing and still viable place to live I
think would help."Governor Announces Funding for Danville's Palmer Arena Renovation
