HEAT ADVISORY - Check on Seniors

Updated: Tuesday, August 26 2014, 10:25 PM CDT

THE ELDERLY ARE EXTREMELY VULNERABLE TO THE BLAZING TEMPERATURES.

THAT'S WHY VOLUNTEERS WITH THE AMERICAN RED CROSS MEALS ON WHEELS PROGRAM CHECK TO MAKE SURE THE SENIOR CITIZENS THEY DELIVER TO ARE SAFE.

IF AN ELDERLY CLIENT DOESN'T ANSWER THE DOOR, VOLUNTEERS SAY THEY CALL A FAMILY MEMBER OR EMERGENCY CONTACT.

FOR MANY OF THE SENIORS WHO RECEIVE FOOD FROM MEALS ON WHEELS,  THE VOLUNTEER DELIVERING THEIR FOOD MAY BE THE ONLY PERSON THEY SEE ALL DAY.

"HEAT LIKE WE HAVE TODAY, WE REALLY GOT TO CHECK AND MAKE SURE THEY'RE OKAY. MAKE SURE THAT THEY'VE GOT AIR, IF THEY DON'T HAVE AIR THAT THEY'VE AT LEAST GOT FANS AND AGAIN CALL THEIR FAMILY IF THEY DON'T HAVE THAT."

EXPERTS SAY IF YOU HAVE AN ELDERLY LOVED ONE, FRIEND OR NEIGHBOR, VISIT THEM IN PERSON TO MAKE SURE THEY'RE OKAY.

YOU CAN ALSO SET A GLASS OF WATER IN EACH ROOM OF THEIR HOUSE TO MAKE SURE THEY'RE ABLE TO ACCESS FLUIDS EASILY.

IF A SENIOR IS SHOWING SIGNS OF HEAT-RELATED ILLNESS, LIKE MUSCLE CRAMPS, HEADACHES, NAUSEA, OR VOMITING, SEEK MEDICAL CARE IMMEDIATELY.
