Historic Farmington High School Fire

Updated: Friday, May 16 2014, 04:43 PM CDT

FARMINGTON -- A historic school building in central Illinois goes up in flames.

Fire crews were called to the old Farmington High School early Thursday morning.

Heavy smoke and flames kept firefighters from entering the building once they arrived.

Many memories went up in smoke as the blaze consumed the building.

Many former students still live in the area including firefighter Anthany Scapecchi.

"That was a big historic buidling, I mean, that's what it means to the community. The school's been here for years as a historic site."

"Me and my best friend met there. I was the last class to graduate from there. It's a pillar, I mean, everyone knows where and what it is."

The Fire Chief believes the blaze started on the top floor of the building.

The former school was being used by several businesses, including an auto shop.
