Jacksonville's Teens Get Schooled at Police Work

Updated: Tuesday, June 10 2014, 03:33 PM CDT

JACKSONVILLE -- 15 teens got a first hand glimpse into the life of a police officer today.

The Jacksonville Police Department hosted its first annual "Teen Police Academy." The kids learned about handling a crime scene, shooting firearms, and what goes on in an officer's daily routine.

Patrolman Tino Vasquez thinks it's very valuable lesson. "We can take care of any misconceptions that might be out there, give them a better understanding what we do, especially those who are considering law enforcement as a career."

Organizers say they also spoke with today's participants so police would better understand the youth in the community and hear any concerns they might have.
