Looking Into Opening Medical Marijuana Dispensaries in Decatur and Urbana

Updated: Wednesday, June 18 2014, 11:20 AM CDT
URBANA-- Medical marijuana in Central Illinois could bring in some much-needed revenue.

It wouldn't be the hundreds of millions of dollars like Colorado has received after legalizing recreational marijuana, but still... "We're still talking about a significant amount of money." Ryan Peters represents an Indiana company that has identified Urbana as a prime location to open up a dispensary. "It's more of a progressive city in this area. There are several medical campuses nearby, and that's what drew us to this location." Peters says the store will be a medical facility only, not a headshop. He admits changing public perception on marijuana may be a challenge, but he's hopeful.

Dustin Kelly says, "I think there's a lot of potential benefit to anyone who's suffering from a wide variety of diseases. And people can either go and get it by difficult means or illegal means, or they can go through legal and safe means. And those are ways that are taxed, which brings in more revenue."

Monday night's pitch was just the first step of many, but some council members were already on-board. Councilman Erik Jakobsson says, "I am just one person, but I would be happy to be one of the places that would play a role in implementing this law."

And while the idea is only in it's infancy, Peters is encouraged. "The fact that they were accepting of what we had to say shows there's a potential home here."Looking Into Opening Medical Marijuana Dispensaries in Decatur and Urbana
