Man Faces Prison Time for Tampering with Raw Meat at Grocery Store

Updated: Monday, August 4 2014, 03:13 PM CDT

BELLEVILLE -- An Illinois man is facing prison time and hefty fines after tampering with packaged meat at a grocery store.

Needles were found in packages of hamburgers,  steaks and a pork chop at the Shop 'n' Save in Belleville.

Prosecutors say one of the consumers found the needle in her mouth while eating. Another person reported a needle stuck in the hand. And a third found the needles in the meat, but was not hurt.

"I don't know whether or not he tampered with other products besides meat. We suspect he did not, based upon our investigation, but the reality is that this individual was going into a store and he was tampering with products with a needle that could cause harm to people and it was indiscriminate harm."

The incident was isolated to one store and customers can return products for a full refund.
