Morgan County Property Assessment Complaints

Updated: Monday, June 23 2014, 11:32 AM CDT

MANY GREAT THINGS COME FROM BEING A HOMEOWNER... UNFORTUNATELY ONE OF THE DOWNSIDES -- HAPPENS TO BE PROPERTY TAXES.
SOME IN JACKSONVILLE THINK THERE'S A PROBLEM WITH THE WAY THEIR PROPERTIES ARE BEING VALUED.
NEWSCHANNEL AT NINE'S JORDAN ABUDAYYEH SHOWS US WHY.

"Probably over $20,000 or more.."

THAT'S HOW MUCH SANDY MARTIN SAYS HER HOME IN JACKSONVILLE WAS OVERASSESSED.
SHE DIDN'T REALIZE IT UNTIL SHE WENT TO SELL IT THAT IT WASN'T WORTH AS MUCH AS THE COUNTY SAID IT WAS.

"It isn't just my home, I've been told by three different people that the whole quadrant is overassed and that several have gone in to fight the taxes, but I missed the window for this year, and I was like that's not right;. If several have complained there should be something, there should be another review."

PROPERTY TAXES ARE USUALLY PUBLISHED THE LAST WEEK IN DECEMBER AND HOMEOWNERS HAVE 30 DAYS TO DISPUTE THEIR FINDINGS, BUT IF YOU MISS THE WINDOW YOU HAVE TO WAIT ANOTHER YEAR.

"Unless there is a correction, and that's called a certificate of error, and if weave made an error in the property say that is was wrong square footage or something that was physically wrong with our calculations, then we can offer a certificate of error."

THE COUNTY DOESN'T WANT TO LEAVE IT'S RESIDENTS WITHOUT OPTIONS, BUT IT'S NOT UP TO THEM....

"This is not our process this is what's prescribed to us from the Department of Revenue."
