Mother & Son Killed in Crash On Easter

Updated: Tuesday, April 29 2014, 03:02 PM CDT

A mother and son are dead following the fiery crash Sunday on Illinois 49. They were going to a family cookout in Homer when the unthinkable happened just 2 miles away from their destination.

Newschannel at Nine's Nate Rodgers spoke with a relative of the victims about how a time of celebration turned so quickly into a time of mourning.

"The are no words to describe how I feel right now. I'm numb. I haven't slept."

No sleep after receiving news that his mother and brother died in a car crash yesterday on their way to his house for Easter dinner. The crash happened at Illinois 49 and Homer Road around 12:30.

"When I got home initially they were suppose to been there. I thought maybe they'd went to the grocery store whatever the case. But they weren't there and when the phone started ringing, I knew something had happened."

Illinois State Police say the family's jeep collided with another vehicle and soon caught fire. 62-year-old Dorothy Doxtator and son 33-year-old Scott Doxtator died at the scene. Otis Doxtator, husband and father, was driving. He's in critical condition at Carle Hospital. But one day later, the focus is his parents' legacy.

"I want this to be a celebration of their life, not so much on the tragedy of what happened by a celebration of who they were, the type of people they were, the lives they've touched.

Otis and Dorothy Doxtator, both of Indianapolis, were married for 41 years. Otis, a Vietnam veteran and Dorothy was a teacher's aid for children with special needs for 25 years. Both very active in church, but their main ministry was caring for their youngest child, Scott, who had cerebral palsy. His brother says, no worries now.

"There is no Cerebral Palsy in Heaven. My brother is dancing and running and flying and my mom is there to see it. So there is a resurrection of my brother and my mom like never before that happened on Easter and I'm Happy."

Certainly some incredible strength and faith from that family.

A 19-year-old also involved in that accident is charged with improper lane usage. State police are still investigating.
