Planning for an Outdoor Graduation at U of I

Updated: Monday, May 5 2014, 02:33 PM CDT
CHAMPAIGN -- University of Illinois graduates will receive their diploma in just two weeks, but for the first time in decades the ceremony is moving outdoors. Due to renovations at the State Farm Center commencement is being moved outdoors at Memorial Stadium. For the first time in 40 years the school's graduation ceremony will receive quite a shake up.

School officials want to ensure everyone is protected in case mother nature doesn't cooperate. That's why they've ordered 3,000 to keep on hand for the graduates. Visitors and spectators will also be allowed to bring an umbrella if they need to. They're hoping for a sunny day, but one never knows what the day will hold this far in advance. There's only one commencement ceremony this year and it's on May 17th. Illini graduate and astronaut Mike Hopkins will be the commencement speaker.
