Weather Alert

Heat Advisory Extended Through Monday

IL (AP) -- Heat advisory remains in effect from 1:00pm this afternoon to 7:00pm CDT Monday. Dangerous levels of heat and humidity will occur from this afternoon through Monday afternoon. Heat index values will peak from 100 to 107 degrees in the afternoon hours with high temperatures in the low to mid 90s and dew points in the 70s.
The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will lead to an increased risk of heat-related stress and illness. The very young, the elderly, those without air conditioning and those participating in strenuous outdoor activities will be the most susceptible. Also car interiors will reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes. Beat the heat, check the backseat! Never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle.
Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.
To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency. Call 9-1-1.
A heat advisory means that a period of hot temperatures is expected. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, and stay out of the sun. And check up on relatives and neighbors.

Prepping for the Sangamon County Fair

Updated: Wednesday, June 18 2014, 11:20 AM CDT
SANGAMON COUNTY -- Get ready for carnival rides, corn dogs and lemon shake ups. As of Tuesday, we're less than 24 hours away from the Sangamon County Fair, but before you can experience any of it, there's still much to do.

The Sangamon County Health Department makes its rounds to all of the vendors at the fair and they're checking for things like hand washing stations, temperature gauges, even chlorine testing strips; and that's just for the food. Wait until you see what needs to be done to keep all those rides safe.

It's just around the bend.

"It's about community. It brings everybody together. This is the Sangamon County Fair," said Fair President Steve Walter.

This it the annual festival expected to draw at least 35,000 people.

"At any one given time at the County Fair there's 250 volunteers working these fairgrounds," said Walters. "We have something different every day."

As well as the old favorite. But before you can take a spin: a test ride.

"Beginning of the season we train them and then we do a follow up every week," said Terry Swyear, President of Swyear Amusements.

There are 20 rides for fair-goers to enjoy this year including two news one. All have the same regulations.

"Checking barrings and blocking and cables and guy-wires and safety pins and harnesses," said Swyear.

Over at the concessions stands...

"I've never seen so much bleach in my life is what, you know, they just non-stop scrub all day long," said Walter.

Getting ready for health inspections which start Wednesday and continue at random for the rest of the week.

"They check all of your temperatures of your meat to make sure nothing's too hot," said Jessica Puckett of Taft's Food Concessions. "They don't want people getting sick from illnesses like bacteria that can get in to the food."

It's all to make sure everyone is safe, that way everyone can have fun.

"It makes me smile. That's what it's about, all the kids. Little kids it gets my heart," said Swyear.

The Macon County Fair struggled with money this year, so much so that they had to forgo a lot of the main attractions. The President of the Sangamon County Fair says they're feeling the pinch, as well, but they're still trying to bring it all your way, while keeping the gate prices as low as possible.

The fair officially kicks of Wednesday morning at 9 A.M. It runs through Sunday and it features some major music. Headliners include Lynard Skynard. Prepping for the Sangamon County Fair
