Updated: Wednesday, May 14 2014, 11:05 AM CDT

CHAMPAIGN -- Champaign County residential property taxes are due next month and there are various exemptions that you may qualify for.

The nearly 73,000 tax bills are expected to generate $303 million for Champaign County.

But county officials want you to know there are exemptions for seniors, those who are disabled and veterans.

But it's up to homeowners to ensure the Assessors Office has your current information.

County officials say the exemptions could easily save you hundreds of dollars.

"The owner occupied exemption is worth exemption is worth $6,000 of accessed value, depending on where you live in Champaign County, it could be anywhere from $400 - $600 in savings. The over 65 at $5,000 could be anywhere from two to three to four-hundred dollars in savings off of your tax bill."

Exemptions are not retroactive. They only apply to the current tax bill.

You shouldn't contact the Supervisor of Assessments Office if you have questions. They will walk you through the process if you qualify. If you are eligible, you can still get those exemptions on this year's tax bill.
