Proposed Cell Phone App to Pay Parking Meters

Updated: Monday, June 9 2014, 10:35 AM CDT
CHAMPAIGN -- Champaign Public Works is coming to the city council with a new take on the "pay phone". The option they are suggesting is to create a new phone app that would allow you to feed your meter with your cell phone. It would also include a telephone number that you could call or a website you could go to that would allow you to digitally add some more time. A spokesperson for the Champaign Public Works Department says that the plan would not cost the city any money for installation or operation and will help everyone.

"I think it's always just a simple thing - a meeting runs late, or a lunch runs late, or you just get caught up with something and you forget. This has the ability to send reminders as well as offer different ways for payment," says Kris Koester of the Champaign Public Works Department.

Koester tells us the idea came from how university parking meters work it would be the same free app for those meters that people could use. All you would need to do is register online which takes a few minutes and punch in the id number of the meter you want to pay.
