Run for Raley

Updated: Sunday, August 3 2014, 03:11 PM CDT
Gone too soon, less than two months old Mitochondrial disease takes the life of Raley Kirby. Today her family honored her life with their seventh annual Run 4 Raley 5k race.

Newschannel at nine's Kim Shine shares Raley's story and how that money is helping others.

Run 4 Raley is in annual event in honor of Raley Kirby, an infant who died a day shy of her 7th week birthday. Its an event her parents say is saving lives every day.

"We were in the hospital for a while, we ended up finding out the she had a mitochondrial disease, something we never heard of. And we wanted to get her any sort of treatment that we may not be able to afford on our own." said Leslie Kirby, Raley's mother.

So seven years ago, Leslie Kirby and her husband Luke started run 4 Raley. A 5k, raising money for research through the united mitochondrial disease foundation.

"We ourselves did not have an actual diagnosis until last year, so we feel the money we raise, the awareness, that's all in turn, sort of come around to help us as well." said Kirby.

Now, with two other children, Leslie says this run is a way to remember her daughter and to rally the community around this important research.

"Mitochondrial disease wasn't very well known until the Run 4 Raley. We're newer to Philo so it's a nice way to meet people and just be involved in the community." said Margaret Mancher, a participant of the run. "We do this for her. People know her name. I have people say, oh, 'you're run4raley, and it's like, oh you know. So we really feel like we're doing something good and people are recognizing us and if we can continue to do that, we're going to do so."

Kirby says they hit that $100,000 donation mark at last year's event.
The biggest turnout in the race's history. In Philo, Kim Shine, Newschannel at Nine on Fox Illinois.

Over the last seven years, Run 4 Raley has collected more than $100,000  for mitochondrial research. To find out how you can donate click here.
