Sangamon County Introduces Cyber Crimes Hotline

Updated: Wednesday, February 12 2014, 10:55 AM CST

Sangamon County is taking an extra step to protect its citizens from cyber dangers. Today, officials announced they have set up a new cyber crime hotline.

The sheriff's office says the number of cyber crime cases has surged over the past few years. From text messages to e-mails and phone calls, people can be exposed to scams through all forms of electronic communication.

Officials urge cyber crime victims to call the hotline number, 217-753-6686.

"The point of this hotline is that we're going to be able to immediately get this information out to the media and through our social media to warn the citizens of Sangamon County about this scam," Sangamon County Undersheriff Jack Campbell said.

While seniors have been the most-targeted group, the sheriff's office asks everyone to be careful.
