School Overcrowding

Updated: Monday, February 3 2014, 05:25 PM CST

Champaign Unit 4 school leaders say most of the district's schools are over capacity. This year, elementary and middle schools are at 96% capacity and high schools are at 103%. School officials have already approved a site to build a new Central High School which will provide some relief, but talks of adding temporary classroom trailers are in the works for other schools in the district.
Unit 4 officials project by 2022 the high schools will be120% over capacity. They say the trailer option at many schools isn't ideal and that federal and community support will play into the future of Unit 4's expansion. According to school officials, in addition to capacity schools are normally built to last about 30 years. Centennial High School is the "youngest" school in the district and it's 51 years old.
