Springfield Mayor on Medical Marijuana Dispenseries

Updated: Tuesday, August 19 2014, 12:04 AM CDT
SPRINGFIELD -- Elsewhere in Illinois Springfield city council members are working to create rules for medical marijuana facilities for the capital city. City alderman are currently weighing options for where dispensaries can open. Dispensaries cannot be located near schools, churches or residential zones and one idea is to put it downtown.  That's because it would be considered under zoning similar to a drug store. This morning, Springfield Mayor Mike Houston was a guest on good day Illinois for "Mayor Monday." He explained why the capital city could get a dispensary.

"The reason that i would think that we would end up with a dispensary is the fact is that were a regional medical center. We have
Two major hospitals as well as the Springfield clinic the SIU School of Medicine within the community. It would seem logical that something would be located," says Mayor Mike Houston.

Mayor Houston says the city of Springfield could end up with two dispensaries within city limits. The topic will be debated at  tomorrow night's city council meeting. City aldermen will determine a date for a public hearing on the issue in the future.
