Storm Chaser Reed Timmer Visits Springfield

Updated: Monday, February 17 2014, 01:20 PM CST
A world-famous storm chaser made a stop in central Illinois today. But
he's not on the hunt for severe weather--at least not on this trip.

Meteorologist
Reed Timmer spoke in front of the Illinois Professional Land Surveyors
Association. Timmer is one of the stars of the Discovery Channel series
Storm Chasers. He's also well-known for his custom-built Dominator
storm-chasing vehicles.

He was in central Illinois in November,
chasing the tornado that struck the town of Washington. But he says it
evaporated before it reached his equipment.

"It's hard enough to
find tornadoes, and then to intercept them, it takes that extra level,"
Timmer said. "And with storms moving that fast of 70 miles per hour, it
was just chaos. You'd have to get really lucky to get inside a tornado
like that, and with a tornado that strong, who knows if even the
Dominator would have been able to handle it."

Timmer is currently
finishing his Ph.D. in meteorology, and is researching seasonal climate
prediction. He says this winter's weather is similar to 2011, with a
ridge trough pattern in January, and warm surface temperatures in the
North Pacific. He believes that means we could be approaching a very
active storm season. Storm Chaser Reed Timmer Visits Springfield
