The Dangers of Fireworks

Updated: Thursday, June 26 2014, 04:33 PM CDT

The 4th of July for many is a favorite holiday weekend.

But it's also one of the busiest days for the burn unit at Memorial Medical Center due to the high number of firework-related accidents.

Doctors say they treat about 10,000 burn vicitims across the country every year.
In Illinois, fireworks aren't even legal, but that doesn't stop many people from getting hands on with the holiday tradition.
On July 4 alone, memorial officials say they see about a dozen burn victims.

"The biggest problem that we see is people will light the fireworks in their hand, and will allow the fuse to go down, thinking that they have time to either, throw the firework, or to do something with it, and in fact, the firework will combust or light, or ignite."

Burn unit specialists also mentioned nearly half of the patients they see over holiday weekends like this one are from flare-ups  caused from the use of accelerants on either brush fires or BBQs.
Remember, it only takes one accident for everything to go up in flames.

If you're looking for early fireworks, the 21st annual Rock the Dock is coming this Friday to Lake Springfield Marina.
Food, drinks, and live music will accompany one of the largest fireworks displays in central Illinois.

"We've got a great fireworks guy by the name of Carl Steinbacher. Carl's been doing this with us for an awful long time. And he's promised us that every year, that it's gonna be better than the year before.  And he's got some sort of special deal - there's 450 color breaks on this fireworks show tonight."

Free tickets are available now at any of the local Green car dealerships.
If you wait to get them at the door, they're $10 each.
