Traffic Light Times To Change Along North Prospect

Updated: Tuesday, July 15 2014, 03:00 PM CDT

City officials hope this plan will help drivers pass through North Prospect a little more efficiently

Last year, the city of Champaign hired a Peoria based engineering company to research traffic light times along the stretch from Town Center Boulevard to Interstate drive.

Public works officials say traffic lights haven’t been re-adjusted in nearly a decade and as a result of all the new businesses, the traffic buildup can get bad.

Area residents say it's a daily head ache.

Jasmine Harrison of Champaign says "it's horrible when you're sitting at certain lights, you're there for about two to three minutes, if you're not close enough to the white line or you passed the white line..then some of them by the time it turns green, as soon as you get through that light, it's already turning back red".

City officials now have new timings and hope to reset the signals before U of I students return for class next month.

The report did not review congestion issues near the I-74 ramp from Marketview heading south, because it's an IDOT problem, according to a public works spokesperson.

City officials believe the retiming will certainly move traffic along and lesson some of the frustration for motorists.
