Tuscola Elementary School Controversy

Updated: Thursday, August 28 2014, 11:19 AM CDT

TUSCOLA - A Tuscola elementary school is responding to allegations made by parents that some students were improperly punished. The parents and students say they were made to sit in the hot sun for ten minutes during the school's recess.

It happened Tuesday around 11 A.M. during an outdoor recess. That's when some of the students say they were told to take a 10 minute time-out from recess and sit on the hot blacktop because they had acted up the day before.

In a letter to parents today, the school principal said there was a time-out given, but the students were told to simply "sit down" and were not forced to sit on the blacktop, though some did. Some parents, however, believe the punishment was too severe given the high temperatures Tuesday.

Now the school has sent the following letter out to the parents giving their side of the story:

Dear North Ward parents,

As you probably have seen in the news last night and this morning, there was a story regarding our fourth grade recess yesterday.

As soon as we heard of the concern last evening, we began investigating what occurred. We have spoken to the supervisors involved. I will also continue to look into the situation today. From what I have gathered, our fourth graders were being disruptive in the cafeteria on Monday. There were several reminders given, but the behavior continued. Therefore, there was a time out issued for the following recess time.

Students were asked by the supervisors to sit out for ten minutes of their recess time - not necessarily on the blacktop, just to sit down. Some of the students did sit on the blacktop. The supervisors did not have any students expressing a

concern about the heat of the pavement. There was no malicious intent on the part of the supervisors to ever harm the students in any way.

With that being said, we never want any of our students to ever be in a position where they are injured. We truly love your kids and work very hard to make sure they have a positive experience here at school. It was a mistake to allow the students to sit on the blacktop yesterday. The supervisors realize the error. I apologize on behalf of the school for the mistake. We will work to make sure this doesn't happen again. If consequences need to be issued, we will do so in the classroom or in the grass if the pavement is hot. If you ever have concerns, always feel free to call or email me or your child's teacher. We are here to support and love your child. Have a good day.
