Vermillion County, Danville VA Housing

Updated: Wednesday, May 14 2014, 11:25 AM CDT

VERMILLION CO., DANVILLE -- Plans for a Veteran and family housing development in Danville are underway.

The almost $17 million project is being paid for by Mercy Housing, but now it may not happen.

Newschannel at Nine's Heather Good explains why.

"The project will not go through without the financial support that these vouchers will provide."

For a few years, a project has been in the works for a new veteran housing facility on the grounds of the Veterans Affairs Illiana Health Care system in Danville. Officials say everything is in order, except one things.

"Without the vouchers, you can't have the project."

Mercy Housing designed the project and will run the facility when it is built, but first it is working with the Danville Housing Authority to get the 65 project-based vouchers through housing and urban development.

"We submitted a very lengthy application to them trying to show that there is a need for these homes here in our area."

The vouchers are unique because they stay with the unity so any veteran that moves in will get the subsidy for rent, but the facility itself is also unique.

"If a veteran is homeless, he or she has a significant other, spouse or children, they're probably homeless as well so in a couple years you're actually going to see kids here on the campus school bus is coming on the pick children up to take them to school and so forth."

The facility is designed for 65 units -- one, two and three bedrooms -- to be built on the former VA golf course on the south side of campus.

"The developer will come out and build the 65 apartments at no cost to us, in return then they're going to get the subsidies from these vouchers to pay for that as they go along, as veterans are housed in those apartments."

"We believe this is something that's going to be very good for the community and we're very proud to be a part of it."
