Weather Warms Up, West Nile Season Nears

Updated: Thursday, May 15 2014, 11:15 AM CDT

ILLINOIS -- It may be dreary outside and slightly on the cooler side, but health officials are warning us to be on the lookout for mosquitos.

The Illinois Department of Public Health is now looking for birds carrying the West Nile Virus.

The state recently gave nearly $3 million in grants to local health departments to help them enhance prevention programs.

Experts say the weather will play a role in how bad the West Nile season is.

Hot, dry weather tends to breed more virus carrying bugs.
