Children Scared To Play Outside After North Champaign Shooting

Updated: Monday, July 21 2014, 11:15 PM CDT
CHAMPAIGN -- "Kids can't be outside without hearing a gunshot, one after another, just like that," Paris Crawford, 10, said.

Crawford says she's scared to go outside in her community. She and her older sister live just blocks from the scene of a deadly shooting where 22-year-old Rakim Vineyard was killed. Investigators say Vineyard died of a gunshot wound to the back.

"I really don't go out in the neighborhood because everybody shoots all the time and bullets don't have eyes," said 14 year old Fess Hawkins, who is Crawford's older sister.

Investigators think Saturday's killing was planned and need witnesses to come forward.

"This can't happen again. If neighbors don't stand up and say we know that happened and this is who did this, that's what we need to solve these crimes," Deputy Chief Troy Daniels said.

Local parents say action and communication will help end the violence. City Council member Will Kyles agrees.

"Fear is something that we cannot deal with at this time. We all need to stand together as a community and put an end to this violence," Michelle Causey, a concerned parent said.

"When people see that you really care and when they see that you really have their best intentions at heart then things change. Right now, you're dealing with kids and young adults that don't feel like that have any hope," Kyles said.

But hope still lies in Crawford and her sister -- who have solutions of their own.

"It's not based on if someone wants to build a relationship with you, it's them as a person. It's how they act," Hawkins said.

"Take away all the guns. The only people who should have guns is the police," Crawford added.

****Police say a bullet also struck a 14 year old teenage boy in the leg, but was travelling slow enough that he was not injured. Children Scared To Play Outside After North Champaign Shooting
