CHATHAM -- AMEREN CONTRACTORS ARE BUSY IN CHATHAM REPLACING NATURAL GAS LINES.

IT'S PART OF 1.4 MILLLION DOLLARS OF WORK TO REPLACE THE GAS INFRASTRUCTURE IN SPRINGFIELD AND IN CHATHAM.

THE OLD, STEEL GAS PIPES HAVE COUPLINGS THAT COULD RUST MORE EASILY THAN THE PLASTIC PIPES LEADING TO GAS LEAKS AND POTENTIALLY EXPLOSIONS.

IT'S THE THIRD PROJECT IN THE AREA AND IS DUE TO WRAP UP IN NOVEMBER AFTER REPLACING MORE ALMOST THREE MILES OF PIPING.

"Yeah, we're being very proactive with it. So we feel like we have a very safe, reliable system right now. We want to replace this pipe so we can maintain that safety and reliabiltiy."

THE COST OF ALL THIS WILL BE PASSED ON TO AMEREN CUSTOMERS ..STARTING SOME TIME NEXT YEAR, THOUGH THE COMPANY SAYS IT WON'T BE MUCH -- ABOUT AN EXTRA 360  OVER THE COURSE OF A YEAR.

THAT'S LESS THAN A PENNY PER DAY.
